PromptLikeEngineer vs Langfuse (2026)

Langfuse is an open-source platform for tracing, evaluating and managing the prompts an LLM application runs. PromptLikeEngineer is a prompt library you work with from a terminal, an agent or the web. Langfuse does far more; the question is whether you need any of it.

Disclosure

We build PromptLikeEngineer. Langfuse facts below come from its pricing page (langfuse.com/pricing), its self-hosting page and its prompt management docs, last read on October 19, 2026. Pricing moves, so check again before you buy.

Where Langfuse wins

Everything around a running application. Tracing, sessions, token and cost tracking, datasets, experiments and LLM-as-judge evaluators are what its plans are measured in. PromptLikeEngineer does none of that and is not planning to.

Open source and self-hosting. You can run the same stack on your own infrastructure, inside a VPC or on-premises. PromptLikeEngineer is a hosted service; if your data must stay on your servers, Langfuse is the one to pick.

A lower paid entry price with more in it. Core at $29/mo is cheaper than our $39 Team and includes unlimited users plus the tracing and evaluation features. If you want those, the price comparison is not close.

Prompts in a running app. The SDKs fetch a prompt by label and cache it on the client, so a prompt change can reach production without a deploy. We have no runtime SDK; for a private prompt we suggest resolving the label at build time.

Where PromptLikeEngineer fits better

A terminal and no account. The CLI saves, lists and shows prompts as plain files on your machine. Nothing is uploaded unless you run ple sync. Langfuse needs a cloud account or a server you run.

terminal
npx -y promptlike@0.9.0 save "code review" -m "Review this diff for bugs: {{diff}}"
npx -y promptlike@0.9.0 list

Prompts where you work. The same library is available to Claude Code through the MCP server, so an agent can fetch a prompt by name instead of you pasting it.

Nothing to operate. Self-hosting Langfuse means running its web and worker containers plus Postgres, ClickHouse, Redis or Valkey, and blob storage. If you want only prompt history and diffs, that is a lot of machinery. The trade-off is the one above: ours is hosted only.

Roles without an add-on. Admin, editor and viewer roles come with Team. On Langfuse's page, fine-grained RBAC is listed with the Teams add-on.

Which one to pick

pick by need
An application in production and you need
traces, evals, datasets and cost tracking → Langfuse
Data must stay on your own servers → Langfuse (self-hosted)
Prompts fetched by label at runtime in an app → Langfuse
Prompts you write and reuse from a terminal
or Claude Code, with history and diffs,
no account to start → PromptLikeEngineer
A team of up to five sharing one library
at a flat price, no servers to run → PromptLikeEngineer

You can also use both: Langfuse for what your application does at runtime, a prompt library for the prompts you write by hand. Looking at the wider field? See the full tools comparison, PromptLikeEngineer vs PromptLayer or how deployment labels work here. Or try the CLI first: CLI docs.
